The Chinese Limodoron from The Temple of Flora (1807) by Robert John Thornton

A tall Chinese limodoron orchid trails ivory and burgundy blooms down a central stem, perfect for studies, dining rooms and dramatic panelled hallways. The flowers carry rose-pink throats and deep green sepals, set against a brooding slate-grey sky with a distant village tucked into the mountains. Robert John Thornton produced this plate for his 1807 Temple of Flora, an antique aquatint that lands cleanly in heritage botanical, moody decor and gallery-style assortments. The composition reads almost theatrical, more storm-front than greenhouse, and that is a large part of its charm.
